Springfield, Ill. -- Pupils in nine sixth grade classes at
Springfield's Iles school will spend their mornings in intensive environmental education
on April 19 and 20, serving as the audience for a traveling environmental show produced by
the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.
Iles was selected to host the program following a survey by the Illinois EPA two years
ago asking area teachers if they would be interested in sponsoring the show. Iles was
selected based on an evaluation of its application.
On each of the two days, 11 volunteers from the Illinois EPA will present
five interactive games and activities for the pupils between 8:30 and 11:30 a.m.
The event, which falls during Earth Week, is intended to introduce
students to the varied opportunities for environmental protection in their day-to-day
activities by encouraging them to take thoughtful looks at everyday actions and recognize
the potential for environment-friendly decisions.
