Springfield, Ill. -- The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is announcing that the vehicle emissions test station located at 2450 Landmeier Rd., Elk Grove Village, Ill., will reopen for testing on Thurs., May 27.

The Elk Grove Village station has been closed since January and was completely reconstructed for the new, enhanced vehicle emissions testing program.

The enhanced program is more effective in identifying the pollutants that contribute to ground-level ozone (smog). Ozone is a respiratory irritant that can cause health problems, especially for children, the elderly, and people with heart and lung diseases.

The new program features more test stations, longer hours of operation -- all Chicago-area stations are now open Mondays -- and an up-to-the-minute wait-time hotline and signs in front of stations that provide motorists information about station wait times. The Elk Grove Village station wait-time hotline number is 800-437-1716.

Vehicles in the test area that are in their fourth model year and beyond are assigned a month in which to be tested. The vehicle owner will receive a test notice from the Illinois EPA in the mail at least two weeks before the vehicle's assigned month.

The Elk Grove Village station hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

For information on the Downers Grove station call 800-437-1716. For information on the emissions test program, call the Illinois EPA at 847-758-3400 or visit the Illinois EPA's Web site at www.epa.state.il.us/air/vim/index.html.
