Springfield, Ill. -- Five new Illinois lake study and improvement projects will share $721,000 through the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Clean Lakes Program. The program, now in its fourth year, is funded by Conservation 2000, a $100 million state initiative protecting Illinois' natural resources and expanding outdoor recreation.

"Thanks to Conservation 2000, Illinois is one of only a handful of states providing long-term funding to safeguard its valuable lakes," Illinois EPA Director Thomas V. Skinner said.

Lakes awarded grants, and the amounts they will receive, are:

  • Governor Bond Lake, Bond County, $57,780
  • Nashville City Reservoir, Washington County, $44,340
  • Lake Storey, Knox County, $195,010
  • Baumann Park Lake, Winnebago County, $250,160
  • Otter Lake, Macoupin County, $173,710

The Governor Bond Lake and Nashville City Reservoir grants will help fund studies to develop technically and economically feasible lake improvement plans. The Lake Storey, Baumann Park Lake, and Otter Lake grants are for implementing in-lake and watershed best management practices recommended in previously developed lake improvement plans.

To date, the Illinois EPA has provided more than $2.1 million in lake study and improvement grants. A total of approximately $3.5 million is expected to be issued over theoriginal six-year Conservation 2000 program period. Pre-applications for 2000 grants should be submitted to the Illinois EPA by August 31, 1999. Final applications are due Oct. 31, 1999.

Conservation 2000 also provides funds to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Department of Agriculture.

Additional information can be obtained from Gregg Good, the Illinois EPA's Clean Lakes Program coordinator, at 217-782-3362.
