Springfield, Ill. -- The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency will
hold a public hearing from 6 to 10 p.m. on Oct. 21 at the Naperville Municipal Building on
the pending application by the Naperville Park District and the Sportsman's Park gun club
for a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit.
The federal permit, issued under a delegation agreement between the Illinois EPA and
U.S. EPA, would authorize discharges from trap shooting at the club into an unnamed
channel connecting to an unnamed ditch that is tributary to the West Branch of the DuPage
River.
The gun club leases its site from the Naperville Park District.
Opponents of the club's permit application maintain that lead pellets from skeet
shooting at the club fall into waters in a wooded area behind the club and constitute an
environmental threat.
During the required public comment period after the application for the permit, record
numbers of comments both supporting and opposing issuance of the permit to the club were
received by the Illinois EPA. In response to the public interest, the public hearing was
authorized.
Anyone with questions about the permit itself may contact Beth Unser at Bureau of Water
Permit Section #15, Illinois EPA, Box 19276, Springfield IL 62794-9276, or by phone at
217-782-0610, 217-782-9143 for the hearing impaired.
Comments will be received for 45 days prior to the hearing and for 30 days following
the hearing. Comments postmarked by midnight, Nov. 20, 1999, should be sent to Hearing
Officer John Williams, Department of Legal Counsel #21, at Illinois EPA, Box 19276,
Springfield IL 62794-9276.
Questions about the hearing itself, or requests for special needs interpreters, should
be sent to Williams or phoned to him at 217-782-5544. Requests for interpreters must be
received by the Agency by Oct. 7, 1999. |
