Springfield, Ill. -- Universities, business firms, local government agencies and individuals in the Chicago metro area are among the first 15 to get rebate checks for adding or converting alternate fuel vehicles to their fleets.

A total of $334,479 will be distributed in the first payments under the Alternate Fuels Act.

"Encouraging the use of cleaner-burning alternate fuel vehicles is a significant weapon in the fight for cleaner air and these fleet operators should be commended for their leadership," said Illinois Environmental Protection Agency Director Tom Skinner.

Illinois EPA reviews applications and authorizes payments of the rebates for conversion costs; the difference between new alternate fuel vehicle costs and gasoline-powered vehicles and the differential for increased fuel costs.

The first round of rebates, which will continue through the end of 2002, range from $196,660 for Commonwealth Edison's conversion of 50 vehicles to run on propane gas, to $576 to William Hendricks, one of three members of the Fox Valley Electric Car Club to qualify for a rebate for his vehicle.

The other two members are Alfred Kitch ($4,000), and George Krajnovich ($3,802).

Other rebate checks for propane gas fuel vehicles go to Sycamore Community Unit School District ($8,111 -- 3 vehicles); Kane County Sheriff's Department ($1,665 -- 1 vehicle).

Rebate checks for natural gas fueled vehicles go to Brookfield Zoo ($44,000 -- 11 vehicles); Connie's Pizza ($31,260 -- 10 vehicles); Northern Illinois University ($17,215 -- 5 vehicles); Kerrigan Plumbing ($7,848 -- 2 vehicles); University of Illinois at Chicago $4,000 -- 1 vehicle); Nicor Gas ($3,944 -- 1 vehicle); Governors State University ($4,000 -- 1 vehicle); Lansing Cleaners ($4,000 -- 1 vehicle); Village of Glencoe ($3,396 -- 1 vehicle).
