Springfield -- On Thursday, March 30, 2000, the Illinois Environmental
Protection Agency and the Western Illinois Regional Council (WIRC) will
host a Brownfields Basic Workshop from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Illinois
Municipal League, 500 East Capitol, Springfield. The purpose of the workshop
is to assist local officials in investigating and cleaning up brownfields
properties in their communities to improve environmental quality and encourage
economic redevelopment.
Brownfields are abandoned industrial and commercial properties that are
contaminated or thought to be contaminated by past use. The most common
brownfields sites are closed gas stations.
The Brownfields Basics workshop will cover such topics as identifying
brownfields sites, applying for brownfields redevelopment grants from Illinois
EPA, and forming partnerships with site owners and future developers. The
workshop will be presented jointly by the Illinois EPA and WIRC with funds made
available by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
The workshop is free and open to city officials located in Sangamon County.
