Springfield, Ill. -- Due to severe storms in the area, the Illinois
Environmental Protection Agency, in conjunction with co-sponsor, the Solid
Waste Agency of Northern Cook County, has canceled tomorrow's Household
Hazardous Waste Collection. The Collection had been scheduled for Saturday
May 20, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., in Glenview.
The facility where the Collection was to be held, the Wheeling Township
Transfer Station, Three Providence Drive, suffered power outages last
night due to the storms. This prevented staff from removing municipal
waste, which is on the site, and allowing them to prepare the site for
the Collection. Thousands of residents and businesses throughout the north
and northwest suburbs are still without power. In some areas, power may
not be restored until Saturday afternoon.
Illinois EPA Director Tom Skinner said, "I regret any inconvenience caused
by canceling the Collection on such short notice, but, I believe the event
will be more beneficial to the community at a later date. The Collection
will be rescheduled."
