News Releases - 2000Household Hazardous Waste Collection Rescheduled
Springfield, Ill. -- The Household Hazardous Waste Collection at the Wheeling Township Transfer Station in Glenview, has been rescheduled for Saturday June 24, 2000, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, and its co-sponsor, the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County. The Collection, which had previously been scheduled for May 20, was cancelled due to severe storms in the area the day before. The facility where the Collection is to be held, the Wheeling Township Transfer Station, Three Providence Drive, suffered power outages due to the storms, which prevented staff from preparing the site for the Collection. "We felt it was important that we reschedule this event as quickly as possible to give citizens the opportunity to rid their homes of unused or leftover household products that are potentially harmful," said Illinois EPA Director Tom Skinner. Citizens may bring harsh chemical cleaners, paints, thinners, antifreeze, used motor oil, weed killers, insecticides and pesticides and similar household products. Fluorescent and other high-intensity discharge lamps may also be brought to the collections. Items not accepted include and auto batteries (which should be taken to a local recycler), explosives, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, agricultural chemicals and all business or commercial wastes. The events are free to the public and are paid for by a portion of the statewide fees on landfilled solid waste and by local agency contributions. Since 1990, more than 206,000 households have participated in 222 events, with more than 41,800 drums of material collected. A contractor hired by Illinois EPA correctly disposes of all the wastes dropped off at the sites. Related Information |
