News Releases - 2000Nicor Mercury Disposal Investigation: Update 1
Springfield, Ill. -- Illinois Environmental Protection Agency teams today visited 11 scrapyard facilities identified as potentially receiving discarded mercury type gas meter regulators from Nicor Corp. Small numbers of regulators and trace or low levels of mercury in the air were recorded at two of the locations. A small box of mercury type regulators and possibly others in a pile were found at DeKalb Iron and Metal, 900 Oak, in DeKalb. Most air readings for mercury were zero but a 0.017 milograms per cubic meter was recorded next to a cracked regulator. A few mercury type regulators were also observed scattered around Newtson Iron, 901 W. Marquette Street, in Ottawa. The highest air reading for mercury there was 0.009 milograms per cubic meter. The facility indicated it had recently received some scrapped regulators. No mercury type regulators or mercury levels in the air were detected at the other nine facilities visited today. Starting Wednesday, Illinois EPA teams will begin inspecting additional Nicor service centers. Nicor has identified 25 more facilities where mercury type regulators have potentially been handled. The Agency hopes to visit 15 centers on Wednesday. In addition, Illinois EPA staff will monitor regulator removal and cleanup activities by Nicor’s environmental contractor at the Bellwood service center, where mercury levels of concern were detected during an inspection on Saturday, Sept. 2. |
