News Releases - 2000Nicor Mercury Disposal Investigation: Update 5
Springfield, Ill. -- Illinois Environmental Protection Agency investigators made return visits to Kropp Forge in Cicero, Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, an initial visit to Dolton Aluminum Co. in Dolton, and informed Nicor Inc. that additional cleaning for mercury was needed at those locations. At Kropp Forge, where a manometer gas pressure meter was removed Thursday, Illinois EPA observed mercury beads in a hole on the floor of a utility room and apparently under a wall. Nicor indicated further cleanup work will be done and Illinois EPA will then revisit and do air meter checks. At Good Samaritan Hospital, despite two previous cleanups by a Nicor contractor, some beads of mercury were still observed today by Illinois EPA investigators in a basement meter room. At Dolton Aluminum, a wall manometer was found and globules of mercury were observed on a shelf below it. Illinois EPA will revisit and do more air meter checks when a cleanup is completed. A manometer was removed from a locked external building at Crossfield Co. in Joliet. Air meter readings by Illinois EPA indicated it was appropriately cleaned up. The sites were among ten identified so far by Nicor as having potential mercury contamination from manometers, out of about 250 non-residential sites Nicor crews visited earlier this week and made visual checks for manometers or mercury. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 teams have also been checking some of the sites. |
