News Releases - 2000Nicor Mercury Disposal Investigation: Update 6
Springfield, Ill. -- Illinois Environmental Protection Agency investigators today continued to make "verification" visits to non-residential facilities that Nicor crews visited last week. Unlike the visual inspections by the Nicor crews, each of the Illinois EPA teams is equipped with an air vapor meter that detects the presence of mercury. "Illinois EPA will continue to provide these quality control checks to make sure Nicor is resolving this problem accurately as well as quickly," said Illinois EPA Director Tom Skinner. He noted Illinois EPA investigators are revisiting some of about 240 sites where Nicor said their crews saw no evidence of mercury contamination or mercury-type manometers, gas line pressure gauge devices that potentially were present in the facilities. So far, since Sept. 15, 29 of those have been inspected and the only one where mercury was detected was Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. A followup inspection at Lutheran General is expected on Tuesday, after venting from a cleanup is complete. The 15 sites visited today were primarily schools and colleges in the Chicago metropolitan area and two more hospitals. About 50 non-industrial sites on the list have been selected for verification first. The Illinois EPA hopes to complete that group on Tuesday. Previously, Illinois EPA monitored cleanups at 10 other sites where mercury was found by Nicor crews. |
