News Releases - 2000Corrected Vehicle Emission Test Notices Mailed by Contractor Today
Springfield, Ill. -- Corrected notices were mailed today to about 70,500 vehicle owners in the vehicle emission testing areas who received information not related to their own vehicles late last week due to an error by the private mailing contractor, MRM Corporation of Caro, Michigan. Information was mistakenly taken from a computer tape that was previously mailed in September. As a result, several motorists contacted the Illinois EPA about receiving information about vehicles they did not own. Last Friday, Oct. 6, the Illinois EPA issued a news release explaining the error and urging motorists to disregard any information not pertaining to their own vehicles. The corrected notices should begin arriving in mailboxes Friday, Oct. 13 and Saturday, Oct. 14, to impacted vehicle owners in the Chicago Metro and Metro East testing areas. The contractor will bear the costs of the reprinting and remailing. Although it is believed this type of mailing error has not occurred previously in the 15-year history of the vehicle emission testing program, Illinois EPA has demanded assurance from the contractor that quality control procedures will be rigorously followed so the confusion and inconvenience the firm caused vehicle owners does not happen again. MRM was subcontracted to do the mailings by Data Com Graphics II of Palatine, the low bidder in 1997 under Illinois Department of Central Management procedures. About 300,000 notices for the program are mailed out each month. Related Information |
