News Releases - 2001Champaign Firm Referred To Attorney General For Air Pollution
Springfield, Ill. -- The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has asked the Illinois Attorney General's Office to pursue legal action to stop Alloy Engineering and Casting Company in Champaign from continuing air pollution violations. Illinois EPA asked the Attorney General to take enforcement action against the company for violating the Illinois Environmental Protection Act and Illinois Pollution Control Board regulations. The alleged violations include air pollution caused by uncontrolled or insufficiently controlled sources of fugitive emissions as well as fallout during periods when control equipment or emission sources are not properly functioning. The referral also cites unpermitted operations. "As a result of previous Illinois EPA inspections and violation notices last year, this facility has made some improvements, but continued releases of particles into the air that impact its neighbors justify further enforcement action," said Illinois EPA Director Tom Skinner. "Local residents have expressed their continuing concerns to us, as has State Representative Rick Winkel," Skinner added. The fugitive emissions primarily involve foundry sand mixed with some metals. Potential land and water pollution issues involving the facility are in earlier stages of the enforcement process and potentially could also be referred to the Attorney General. |
