News Releases - 2001Remedial Action to Begin at Former Park Plating and Metal Finishing Site
Springfield, Ill. -- Clean-up efforts at the former Park Plating and Metal Finishing site located at 923 East River Lane in Loves Park, Winnebago County, Illinois, are tentatively slated to begin the second week of October. This remedial action is being conducted to minimize the risk to human health and the environment and restore the property for future use. Park Plating and Metal Finishing was a small plating shop that performed zinc, black oxide, and cadmium plating of metal screws and fasteners. An inspection at the facility on September 24, 1990, determined that Park Plating was storing hazardous waste. Closure activities were never completed at the facility because, on September 26, 1990, the facility burned to the ground. Discolored groundwater was discovered in a monitoring well in 1994, which prompted the installation of three monitoring wells in 1995. Soil samples were also collected at that time; elevated levels of cadmium, chromium and cyanide were identified. The most recent Illinois EPA investigation showed metal concentrations in the soil exceeded Illinois' Tiered Approach to Cleanup Objectives (TACO). TACO is the Illinois EPA's method for developing clean-up objectives for contaminated soil and groundwater. These remediation objectives protect human health and take into account site conditions and land use. Six soil samples contained hazardous waste, and all three groundwater samples yielded chromium levels in excess of the TACO Groundwater Remediation Objectives. The upcoming remedial action at the Park Plating and Metal Finishing site will include the following actions:
The remedial action is expected to take eight weeks to complete. |
