Springfield, Ill. -- The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency Director Renee Cipriano announced that a household hazardous waste collection has been scheduled for October 27 in Wood River. "We are very pleased we were able to add this collection to our schedule. This will give citizens the area an opportunity to rid their homes of unused or leftover household products."

The collection will be held on Saturday, October 27, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Phillips 66 Refinery, State Highway 111, in Wood River. Citizens may bring motor oil, chemical cleaners, oil-based paints, thinners, antifreeze, weed killers, insecticides and pesticides and similar household products. Although latex paints will be accepted, citizens are encouraged to find alternative uses since latex paints are not considered hazardous. Fluorescent and other high-intensity discharge lamps may also be brought to the collections. Homeowners are also encouraged to bring in mercury-containing products and rid their homes of this toxic substance.

Items not accepted include explosives, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, agricultural chemicals and all business wastes. An Illinois EPA contractor disposes of the potentially harmful wastes in an environmentally friendly manner. Household hazardous waste reduction is an important component of our overall strategy to make Illinois' environment safer," said Cipriano.

The events are free to the public and are paid for by a portion of the statewide fees on landfilled solid waste. The event is co-sponsored by Madison County. Questions can be directed to the Madison County Solid Waste Coordinator at 618-692-7040 or the Illinois EPA at 217-785-8604.
