Argonne, Ill. -- - The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency announced the designation of five additional companies as Illinois Green Fleets. The five companies, which were recognized at a clean fuels conference held today by Chicago Area Clean Cities, were Hollub Heating, Inc. (Chicago), Illinois Corn Growers Association (Bloomington), Illinois Power (Decatur), Schwan's (Statewide), and Springfield Mass Transit (Springfield).

The Illinois Green Fleets Program, administered by the Illinois EPA, is a voluntary program where businesses, government units, and other organizations in Illinois gain recognition and additional marketing opportunities for having clean, alternative fuel vehicles within their fleet.

"The Illinois Green Fleets Program is a great opportunity for fleet owners to have their fleets recognized as making a significant contribution to improving the environment," said Illinois EPA Director Renee Cipriano.

Vehicles powered by natural gas, propane, 85% ethanol (E-85), electricity, hydrogen, or other clean, alternative fuels are considered alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs). A fleet must have a portion of alternative fuel vehicles that use a clean, alternative fuel to qualify as a Green Fleet.

Today's announcement brings the total number of fleets to seventeen that have been designated as Illinois Green Fleets. Dave Kolaz, Illinois EPA, Bureau of Air Chief noted, "we continue to encourage businesses and local governments to use alternative fueled vehicles and achieve recognition as a Green Fleet."
