News Releases - 2002Illinois EPA Holds Public Meeting in Kankakee's Limestone Township
Springfield, Ill. -- Illinois EPA is holding a public meeting Wednesday, February 27, 2002, to discuss the 1988 Shell Oil pipeline release and the Agency's response to the spill. The purpose of the meeting is to provide a technical update. It is being held at the request of Rep. Mary K. O'Brien, 75th District, who represents Limestone Township. Representative O'Brien stated, "I asked for this meeting to help citizens get answers to their questions. They are still concerned about the quality of their drinking water, as groundwater cleanup efforts continue." The meeting will be held at Limestone Grade School, 963 North 5000 West Road, Kankakee, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. According to Illinois EPA Director Renee Cipriano, "This cooperative effort among legislators, state agencies and citizens to exchange information will help us in the resolution of any remaining problems." The Illinois EPA will provide technical personnel, health professionals and regulatory specialists to respond to citizen concerns about the project. In addition, representatives from the Illinois Department of Public Health, the Kankakee County State's Attorney's office and the Kankakee County Health Department have been invited to answer questions from citizens during breakout session. In 1988, Shell Oil Company reported the release of 16,000 gallons of premium gasoline from and underground pipeline. Remediation activities and monitoring of private water wells are ongoing; however, citizen concerns continue. Note: Illinois EPA staff will be available at 6:00 p.m., at the school, for individual interviews with media. |
