Springfield, Ill. -- The State Fairgrounds in Springfield will be the site of the 11th annual Earth Stewardship Day on Tuesday, April 30. The event, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., is expected to attract more than 1100 pupils attending fourth grade classes at 21 Sangamon County schools.

The yearly environmental awareness outreach event is jointly sponsored by the Illinois Departments of Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Commerce and Community Affairs and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. A total of 45 presenter stations are planned, scattered through the Exposition Building, Ethnic Village, the Lincoln stage, and Watershed Park.

Three special guest attractions are scheduled. They will include Brian "Fox" Ellis, of Fox Tales International at Peoria, presenting "Adventures in Nature." His appearance is being funded by the IEPA. The Kaleidoscope Kids of Monticello will offer "The Earth Protectors" and staff from Wildlife Prairie Park at Peoria will present a "Feathered Friends" event.

Earth Stewardship Day is a way to introduce youngsters to the importance of their environment and the ways that even elementary school pupils can act to protect and improve the world around them. A mix of performance and interactive activities are offered.

The IEPA will sponsor six of the individual stations. At these sites, youngsters will play "Environmental Jeopardy" in which losers are "trashed" for failing to correctly answer various environmental questions, and participate in the "Recycle Dash." Micro invertebrates will be the focus of "It's a Bug's Life," and the "Toxic Relay" will let participants help clean up a "contaminated" site. Other stations will offer "Putting for Clean Water" and "How Wet is Our Planet."

To underline the day's "stewardship" focus, youngsters are asked to pack waste-free lunches.
