News Releases - 2002Illinois EPA and Mt. Carmel Hold Brownfields Kick-off Meeting
Springfield, Ill. -- The Illinois EPA and the City of Mt. Carmel met Tuesday to announce redevelopment plans for a former diesel repair facility, which sets on two acres along the main thoroughfare into town. Mt. Carmel will use a $15,713 Brownfields Redevelopment Grant from the Illinois EPA to conduct environmental assessment on the property. The investigation is needed to determine if there are any environmental contamination issues that need to be resolved. Mt. Carmel has partnered with a private business, Federal Assembly, to develop a new venture, which is expected to bring in at least 50 new jobs to the local area. The environmental investigation will be completed prior to the transfer of property. If Federal Assembly purchases the property, they plan to operate a light manufacturing facility in the two buildings currently on the site. "Brownfields grants help communities with the funding they need to evaluate the environmental impact of the past uses of property and enables them to form a plan to rehabilitate the site for redevelopment," said to Illinois EPA Director Renee Cipriano. Governor George Ryan noted that over 50 Illinois communities have now been awarded grants under the program, which began July 1, 1998. "Illinois communities have received over $5 million, to date, for environmental assessments of brownfields sites. This assistance is often the catalyst necessary to bring sites that have been community eyesores or potential hazards back to productive use," Gov Ryan commented. The grants are awarded to Illinois municipalities for environmental assessments of abandoned or underutilized properties in preparation for brownfields cleanup and redevelopment. |
