News Releases - 2002Ryan Announces $105,600 Grant For Livestock Waste Pollution Control Efforts In Northwestern Illinois
Springfield, Ill. -- Gov. George H. Ryan today announced approval of a $105,600 grant to the Blackhawk Hills Resource Conservation and Development Inc. to work with dairy producers in the counties of Carroll, Jo Daviess, Lee, Ogle, Stephenson, and Whiteside on environmentally-friendly wastewater-handling practices. Funding comes from the U.S. EPA under section 319 of the Clean Water Act, a financial assistance grant program administered by the Illinois EPA. These counties are characterized by a large number of livestock operations, especially dairy facilities. "Grants like this help local Soil and Water Conservation Districts continue working with livestock producers to operate successfully with the least possible impact on our prized natural resources," Governor Ryan said. The $105,600 grant will make available technical assistance and cost share to dairy producers in these counties to upgrade their milkhouse wastewater handling practices. The assistance will be offered on a voluntary basis, and limited to operations with less than 1,000 animal units that are not presently required to have a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit. The project will run for two years. "This grant is another example of how Illinois EPA is seeking to work with the agricultural community on positive steps to safeguard the environment," said Illinois EPA Director Renee Cipriano. The offered technical assistance would include a milkhouse waste utilization plan that incorporates a nutrient management plan. Technical assistance will be available to design upgraded milkhouse waste handling facilities and cost share money will be offered to implement the design. |
