News Releases - 2002Illinois EPA Director Issues Seal Order on Decatur Property
Springfield, Ill. -- Illinois EPA Director Renee Cipriano today issued an order to seal the property known as AAA New & Used Tire Sales & Repair, located at 1255 C West Southside Drive in Decatur, due to the detection of mosquitoes infested with the West Nile virus in used and waste tires at the site. The Seal Order restricts public access to the site, and prohibits entry by anyone except authorized personnel in the performance of official duties. Those entering the site must also comply with applicable OSHA regulations. The site is located in a primarily commercial and industrial area, but a few residences are also nearby. Based on reports of illegal tire dumping at the site, Illinois EPA and Macon County Solid Waste Department personnel recently inspected the site. During the inspection, samples were collected of mosquito larvae and of adult mosquitoes. Sample results on the adult mosquitoes were positive for the West Nile virus. The Macon Mosquito Abatement District and a private contractor are treating the site with pesticides on Friday evening to kill both larvae and adult mosquitoes. The site has been referred to the Macon County State's Attorney for enforcement. The State's Attorney also obtained a temporary injunction recently against one the operators of the site, AAA New & Used Tire Sales & Repair, for waste tire violations at another location east of Decatur. The Seal Order will remain in effect until rescinded by Director Cipriano or until all tires are removed. |
