Springfield, Ill. -- The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Brownfields Assistance will conduct a half-day workshop, Building Partnerships and Locating Resources to Expand Your Redevelopment Vision, on Saturday morning, November 16, 2002 at Shawnee Community College in Ullin.

This interactive workshop will introduce city officials and other community leaders to the fundamentals of brownfields cleanup and redevelopment. Brownfields are former industrial and commercial properties with actual or perceived contamination, such as abandoned gas stations or multi-acre closed manufacturing plants.

Workshop topics will include how-to discussions on:

  • Obtaining a brownfields grant worth up to $240,000 to pay for site investigations and cleanups;
  • Receiving an IEPA liability release to improve redevelopment opportunities; and
  • Learning from brownfields projects that have benefited communities in southern Illinois.

Staff from the Illinois EPA's Office of Brownfields Assistance will be available to answer questions and provide one-on-one help to municipal officials and others interested in returning former industrial and commercial properties to productive use.

There is no charge to attend. This event is made possible through the Stevenson Center for Community and Economic Development at Illinois State University using a grant from USDA Rural Development. Other sponsors include the Southernmost Illinois Delta Empowerment Zone, the Southern Five Regional Planning District, and the Southeastern Illinois Regional Planning and Development Commission.
