Springfield, Ill. -- Governor George H. Ryan today announced that the village of Lisle will receive a grant of $697,467 to cover 70 percent of the cost of extending mains to carry municipal drinking water from Lisle to private well owners in the unincorporated area of Woodridge Estates where some wells have been contaminated by an industrial chemical.

Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2003. The project will include installing 6,215 linear feet of 8-inch water main, 4,360 linear feet of 6-inch water main, 23 fire hydrant assemblies and other components to bring water to 112 service connections providing drinking water to an estimated 250-300 users.

Work is scheduled for completion in February 2004.

"This grant is a culmination of the cooperative efforts between local officials and legislators, citizens and Illinois EPA to address this problem through the Governor's Action Team," said Illinois EPA Director Renee Cipriano.

Access to an alternate water source became necessary after investigations disclosed that numerous private wells in the Lisle area had detectable amounts of the potentially harmful chemical trichloroethylene (TCE), an industrial de-greaser. While many of the detections were at levels below federal limits for safe consumption for public drinking water supplies, others exceeded the state and federal standards that set maximum acceptable amounts at 5 parts per billion (ppb). At Woodridge Estates, wells at 40 homes showed detectable amounts of TCE, though none exceeded the 5 ppb limit.

The grant comes from Build Illinois funds. Lisle will be responsible for providing the remaining 30 percent of the total cost.
