News Releases - 2003Three Communities In Madison County Added To Partners For Waste Paint Solutions Program
Springfield, Ill. -- In a single Intergovernmental Agreement with the City of Madison, the Illinois EPA’s Partners For Waste Paint Solutions Program has added the cities of Madison, Granite City and Venice to its network. “These communities will now have a central location to deliver unused and unwanted latex and oil base paint,” said Illinois EPA Director Renee Cipriano. “Residents will be able to take what would have been a waste product and turn it into something useful.” On the second Saturday of each month, from May through October, between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., volunteers from the participating communities will accept and pour off paint products delivered by residents at the Rivers Edge Complex, Old Army Depot Hangar 346, Route 3 at Niedringhaus, Madison. According to Denise McCleary, Madison County Solid Waste Coordinator, “Madison County is very proud of the Tri-Cities area municipalities for their willingness to cooperate to provide their residents such a necessary and outstanding service. With the new agreement and the expanded Collinsville agreement, this service is now available to eight Madison County communities.” The Agency initiated the Partners for Waste Paint Solutions Program in response to a need identified during its one-day Household Hazardous Waste collections. About 50 percent of the waste collected was paint. To address this large volume item, partnerships were developed to offer citizens the opportunity to deliver unwanted paint to local participating paint retailers. There it can be reformulated or remixed for reuse. An Agency contractor picks up unusable paint for proper disposal. As part of this agreement, Madison County will coordinate promotion of the program as well as providing supplies such as gloves, aprons, boot covers, safety goggles, paint can crusher and waste hauling services for crushed cans. Additionally, the Collinsville Paint Partners Program, which had been open to Maryville, Collinsville and Collinsville township residents, will now be expanded this year to include Glen Carbon and Edwardsville residents. Residents of those communities may deliver latex and oil base paint products to Collinsville Township facilities at 1407 Bluff Road, Collinsville, May through October from 8:00 a.m. until noon the third Saturday of each month. The network of nineteen statewide partners can be found on the Agency’s web site at http://www.epa.state.il.us/land/citizen-involvement/paint.html, or by calling the Waste Reduction Unit at (217) 785-8604. |
