News Releases - 2003Illinois EPA Issues Permit for Sangamon County LandfillLandfill Can Now Begin Accepting Waste
Springfield, Ill. -- Illinois EPA Director Renee Cipriano has announced that a permit was issued today to allow Allied Waste to accept waste for disposal within the previously permitted boundaries of the Sangamon Valley landfill facility. The landfill is located just north of Springfield at 2565 Sandhill Road. This facility was closed in the mid-90s after a long enforcement process resulting from a history of environmental violations. Some of the problems included groundwater contamination caused by the landfill and the landfill being built beyond the permitted boundaries. The landfill was previously owned by Jim Watts of Watts Trucking, but was purchased by Allied Waste. In order to allow the project to move forward, Sangamon County entered into a host agreement with Allied. The host agreement included, among other considerations, an annual payment for road improvements of Sand Hill Road and the cost to provide public water supply hook-ups for the neighboring properties currently using private wells. Throughout the development and construction process, the Illinois EPA Springfield Regional Office and the Sangamon County Health Department monitored activities to ensure compliance with the development permit issued in October 2002. The permit did not increase the disposal capacity of the landfill in excess of the disposal capacity originally authorized by a development permit issued in 1980. Landfill disposal capacity actually decreased by approximately one-half million cubic yards, according to calculations provided by the applicant. The decrease in disposal capacity results from a reduction in the lateral waste disposal boundary of the landfill. The 198-acre municipal solid waste landfill contains 74 acres of disposal area. |
