News Releases - 2003Springfield Mass Transit District Adds Biodiesel To existing Green Fleet
Springfield, Ill. -- Illinois EPA Director Renee Cipriano today praised the Springfield Mass Transit District (SMTD) for its commitment to cleaner fuels by adding biodiesel fuel to its natural gas fueled buses. “The District has enhanced its status as a five-star Illinois Green Fleet by this action today in using biodiesel, consisting of soybean oil in the diesel portion of its bus fleet,” said Director Cipriano. “The use of cleaner fuels like biodiesel is good for the State’s economy and is a benefit to air quality in the Springfield area.” The Springfield Mass Transit District first gained recognition in 2001 when they were designated as an Illinois Green Fleet under a program administered by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. The Illinois Green Fleets program is a voluntary program where businesses, government units, and other organizations in Illinois gain recognition and additional marketing opportunities for having clean, American fuel vehicles within their fleet. At the highest level in the Illinois Green Fleet Program, a five-star Illinois Green Fleet, the SMTD operates 18 natural gas-powered buses in its fleet and has a fast-fill natural gas refueling facility on site. Biodiesel is the second clean domestic fuel that the District has implemented. The remainder of the fleet, 32 diesel-powered buses, are now using biodiesel fuel and the district has additional plans of purchasing seven new natural gas-powered buses within the year to replace older diesel-powered buses.
