News Releases - 2003Illinois EPA Renews Agreement with City of RockfordLong-Term Collection of Household Hazardous Wastes Will Continue
Springfield, Ill. -- Illinois EPA Director Renee Cipriano and Rockford Mayor Doug Scott have signed an Intergovernmental Agreement to extend the Rockford Long-Term Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility another three years. The facility, which has been operating since 1995, is a collection point for a variety of hazardous wastes generated by residents of the Rockford area. It is located at the Rock River Reclamation District, located at 3333 Kishwaukee. The Rockford Long-Term Collection Facility officially opened on April 1, 1995, and through the end of June 30, 2003, has handled 28,712 vehicles and collected 6,168 drums of hazardous waste, at a cost to the Illinois EPA of $1,079,212. “The household hazardous waste collections are a very popular and important Illinois EPA program. We are able to help citizens rid their homes of hazardous materials and, at the same time, prevent these chemicals from going into our landfills,” said Cipriano. The agreement requires the City to provide and maintain the facility and to safely store the materials. The Illinois EPA will cover the costs of transporting and disposing of the collected materials. |
