News Releases - 2003$740,956 Loan Will Fund Carlinville Water Tower Replacement
Springfield, Ill. -- A low interest loan of $709,956 has been approved for the city of Carlinville, allowing the community to replace an aging drinking water tower, Illinois EPA Director Renee Cipriano announced today. The new tower, with a capacity of 300,000 gallons, will replace a deteriorated 100,000 gallon tank. The Macoupin County community currently has inadequate storage to meet minimum state standards, a deficiency that will be corrected by the new tower. "It is very satisfying to be able to help communities obtain the funding they need to provide essential services to their residents. Safe and plentiful drinking water is a basic necessity we should never take for granted," Director Cipriano said. Funding for the loan comes from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency's drinking water revolving loan program that utilizes federal and state funding for loans to eligible drinking water treatment projects at half the market interest rate. Interest paid on the 20-year loans is returned to the fund to support low interest loans to other applicants. Director Cipriano noted that 80 percent of the funding for the loan program comes from the federal government and she has urged Illinois' congressional delegation to ensure there is adequate federal funding to continue to assist communities in upgrading this vital infrastructure for the benefit of their citizens and the environment. |
