News Releases - 2003$410,326 Loan Approved For Knoxville To Obtain Radium-Free Drinking Water
Springfield, Ill. -- Illinois EPA Director Renee Cipriano today announced that Knoxville, in Knox County, has been approved for a low interest loan in the amount of $410,326 for connecting to a radium-free supply of drinking water from nearby Galesburg. The loan will allow the community to construct 8,800 feet of 12-inch water main to link to the city of Galesburg to obtain drinking water, replacing the city's current water supply that has amounts of naturally occurring radium that exceed state and federal standards. Community water supplies with naturally occurring levels of radium that exceed federal standards are required to come into compliance with the standards. Long- term consumption of drinking water with excessive radium levels has been linked to health problems. "It is very satisfying to be able to offer critical financial assistance to a community, like Knoxville, where natural conditions have produced a situation that can threaten human health," said IEPA Director Renee Cipriano. The loan is being made from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency's drinking water revolving loan program that utilizes federal and state funding to provide loans for eligible drinking water treatment projects at half the market interest rate. Interest paid on the 20-year loans is returned to the fund to support other low interest loans. The tie-up to Galesburg water is expected to be completed by next December. |
