News Releases - 2003Lake Arlann Drainage District In Pekin Gets $339,113 To Fund Water Quality Protection
Springfield, Ill. -- A $339,113 grant to reduce pollution and protect water quality on Lake Arlann in Pekin was announced today by IEPA Director Renee Cipriano. The grant to the Lake Arlann Drainage District comes from the U.S. EPA section 319 financial assistance grant program, which is administered by the Illinois EPA. The agreement between Illinois EPA and Lake Arlann Drainage District is a cooperative effort between the Lake Arlann Homeowners, Lake Arlann Drainage District, and the city of Pekin. “By working together, local residents, the local community and the IEPA can correct an existing problem, and develop ways to protect water quality in the District in the future,” said Director Cipriano. The Homeowners Association and the city will pay for dredging of accumulated sediments, and the water quality grant will pay for development of Best Management Practices to slow future sedimentation rates. The practices to be used on Lake Arlann include enhancement of an existing sediment control basin, 2800 linear feet of shoreline stabilization, and stabilization of a severely eroded ravine system that is located at the southeast end of the lake. It is estimated that the installation of these Best Management Practices will reduce sedimentation in Lake Arlann by 7,800 tons per year. Design work on these practices is expected to be completed by September 2003 with all construction work to be completed by the grant’s termination date of July 31, 2005. |
