News Releases - 2003Spring Valley Getting $3 Million Loan For Radium Removal Treatment of Drinking Water
Springfield, Ill. -- The Bureau County community of Spring Valley has been approved for a $3 million loan, Illinois EPA Director Renee Cipriano has announced. The loan will allow the community to construct reverse osmosis treatment facilities to remove naturally occurring radium from the city’s drinking water. Presently, the water exceeds the federal and state standards of 5 picoCuries per liter. Long term consumption of excessive amounts of naturally occurring radium have been linked to health concerns. “It is very satisfying to be able to offer critical financial assistance to communities, like Spring Valley, where natural conditions have produced a situation that can threaten human health,” said Director Cipriano. The loan is being made from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency’s drinking water revolving loan program that utilizes federal and state funding to provide loans for eligible drinking water treatment projects at half the market interest rate. Interest paid on the 20-year loans is returned to the fund to support low interest loans to other applicants. Director Cipriano noted that 80 percent of the funding for the loan program comes from the federal government and she has urged Illinois’ congressional delegation to ensure there is adequate federal funding to continue to assist communities in upgrading this vital infrastructure for the benefit of their citizens and the environment. |
