Springfield, Ill. -- Illinois EPA Director Renee Cipriano announced that the city of Gillespie has been awarded an additional $16,070 in Brownfields Redevelopment Funding to complete work being performed at the former Duracraft Kitchens site at 110 West Oak Street.

Gillespie received $87,750 in grant funds in September 2002, to conduct investigation and provide oversight for work under the authority of the Illinois EPA's Site Remediation Program. The work is nearing completion and an increase in funds was requested to complete the Illinois EPA's project reporting requirements. This should allow issuance of a No Further Remediation letter soon. Since initiating the project, Gillespie has taken ownership of the property.

The propertyd is the former DuraCraft Kitchens site, which was owned by Kaan, Inc., and is located in Gillespie's downtown business district. It had remained unused for nearly a year, when a large fire destroyed most of the facility structures. Due to the property's prominent downtown location, the city took steps to proceed with investigation activities necessary to remediate the site.

"Brownfields grants help communities with the funding they need to evaluate the environmental impact of the past uses of property and enables them to form a plan to rehabilitate the site for redevelopment,"said Director Cipriano.

So far, 76 Illinois communities have received nearly $8 million, for environmental assessments of brownfields sites.

The program began July 1, 1998.

The grants are awarded to Illinois municipalities for environmental assessments of abandoned or underutilized properties in preparation for brownfields cleanup and redevelopment.
