News Releases - 2003Illinois EPA Awards Lansing Additional Brownfields Redevelopment Funding
Springfield, Ill. -- Illinois EPA Director Renee Cipriano announced that the Village of Lansing has been awarded an additional $120,000 in Brownfields Redevelopment Funding to complete work being performed at the Novak (former Vulcan Mold Factory), a railroad right of way and the former Fox Lumber sites. The Village requested that the grant award be increased to $240,000, from the original $120,000, to continue environmental investigations at two project sites and to begin remediation activities at a third site. Lansing used the first $120,000 to conduct site assessments and remediation for a property known as the Exchange site and ultimately received a No Further Remediation letter from the Illinois EPA. This site is now being redeveloped as a research and development facility. Lansing is building upon this success by continuing to pursue redevelopment opportunities at the Novak, railroad right of way, and Fox Lumber Sites. The Village plans to begin preparation for Phase II investigations at the Fox Lumber and railroad right of way sites, and remediation at the Novak site in September of 2003, using the additional Grant funding. "Brownfields grants help communities with the funding they need to evaluate the environmental impact of the past uses of property and enables them to form a plan to rehabilitate the site for redevelopment,"said Director Cipriano. So far, 76 Illinois communities have received nearly $8 million, for environmental assessments of brownfields sites. The program began July 1, 1998. The grants are awarded to Illinois municipalities for environmental assessments of abandoned or underutilized properties in preparation for brownfields cleanup and redevelopment. |
