Springfield, Ill. -- Illinois EPA Director Renee Cipriano announced that the town of Normal has been awarded an additional $58,812 in Brownfields Redevelopment Funding to complete environmental investigations at a former drycleaning facility so it can be redeveloped.

A previous award, in the amount of $52,639, was given to the town in 2001 and was used for environmental investigations in the downtown area. With this initial award, Normal wanted to redevelop an abandoned dry cleaning facility and an adjacent property. The dry cleaning structure was demolished in 1997, and underground storage tanks had previously been removed with evidence of remaining residual contamination.

The additional funds will allow the town to complete the environmental investigation, which will include additional soil borings, installation and monitoring of groundwater wells as well as analysis and evaluation of the data. This work is necessary to ensure that the full extent of any contamination is determined.

After the site has been remediated, a Children's Discovery Museum and a parking garage will be constructed.

"Brownfields grants help communities with the funding they need to evaluate the environmental impact of the past uses of property and enables them to form a plan to rehabilitate the site for redevelopment,"said Director Cipriano.

So far, 76 Illinois communities have received nearly $8 million, for environmental assessments of brownfields sites.

The program began July 1, 1998.

The grants are awarded to Illinois municipalities for environmental assessments of abandoned or underutilized properties in preparation for brownfields cleanup and redevelopment.
