News Releases - 2003$780,000 Loan to Sycamore for New Well to Provide Better Drinking Water
Springfield, Ill. -- Sycamore, in DeKalb County, has been approved to receive a low interest $780,495 loan that will let the community drill a new drinking water well and abandon two others that provided poor quality water and had potential contamination issues. Illinois EPA Director Renee Cipriano announced the loan today. The funds will support two contracts, one for drilling and testing the new well, and the other for construction of related water mains, sewers and equipment to serve the well. “Adequate drinking water is a basic need for survival, and good and healthful water are necessary for quality of life. Governor Blagojevich and I are pleased to be able to help this community improve the quality of drinking water it provides to its residents,” Director Cipriano said. The new well will be approximately 1,325 feet deep, with a capacity to produce 1,200 gallons per minute. The loan is being made from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency’s revolving loan program that utilizes federal and state funding to provide loans for eligible public water supplies and waste water treatment projects at half the market interest rate. Interest paid on the 20 year loans is returned to the fund to support other low interest loans. Director Cipriano noted that 80 percent of the funding for the loan program comes from the federal government and she has urged Illinois’ congressional delegation to ensure there is adequate federal funding to continue to assist communities in upgrading this vital infrastructure for the benefit of their citizens and the environment. |
