Springfield, Ill. -- In response to requests from area residents and Macon County officials, the Illinois EPA will hold a public availability session to discuss the application for a permit to operate a composting facility in the area.

The meeting will be held on Thursday September 25, at the Macon County Farm Bureau office at 1150 W. Pershing Ave., in Decatur, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The Farm Bureau office is just west of the intersection of Route 48 and Pershing/Route 121.

The availability session will be an open-house format, with Illinois EPA technical staff, community relations, public information and legal counsel, as well as representatives from Macon County Solid Waste Management and Macon County Health Department, available to answer questions from citizens one-on-one.

The purpose of the hearing is to collect public comments on a proposed new composting facility, Decatur Compost, Inc., on the northwest side of Decatur. The Illinois EPA will review and consider the comments before making a final decision on the permit application. According to state statute and regulations the Illinois EPA is allowed to consider such technical issues as surface and groundwater effects from the facility, dust generated at the site and debris blowing off the site.

Certain factors that the Illinois EPA cannot consider in making its decision include such things as the need for the facility, property values, off-site traffic patterns and wear to roadways and any issues that are the responsibility of other governmental bodies.
