Springfield, Ill. -- Illinois EPA Director Renee Cipriano has issued a Record of Decision for
the remedy of contaminated sediments in the South Ditch portion of the New
Jersey Zinc/Mobil Chemical Superfund site in DePue.
"We selected this method
as the most appropriate way to handle these sediments after we carefully
considered public comments," said Director Cipriano. "This
document is now being forwarded to the U.S. EPA for their concurrence." The
U.S.EPA has concurred with the decision to remove the contaminated sediments
from the South Ditch and transfer them to an interim storage area on the
former New Jersey Zinc plant property, for temporary management. The South
Ditch connects
the former plant property to Lake DePue and is part of the overall Superfund
site.
In a 1995 consent order, the State of Illinois and the potentially responsive
parties (PRPs) agreed to construct the remedy for the South Ditch unnatural
sediments. The PRPs for this site are Horsehead Industries, Inc., Mobil
Oil Corporation (now Exxon Mobil Corporation) and Viacom International Inc.
The
Illinois EPA held a comment period on the Proposed Plan and a public hearing
in 2002 to receive public comments. The Agency carefully considered all
public comments before making an interim decision. The final determination
for a
remedy of the temporarily stored sediments will be decided when the overall
remedy
for the site is chosen.
