Springfield, Ill. -- With concerns about the handling of accumulated garbage, Illinois EPA Director Renee Cipriano has issued a statement urging citizens to use good judgment in their handling of household wastes and recyclables and defer landscape waste disposal.

“I am asking the affected citizens hold off on putting out yard wastes for pick up, until the accumulated garbage is taken care of,” said Cipriano. “I know this is prime time for fall leaf pick up, but this is an unusual situation and we need your help.”

Concentrating on the removal of decomposing garbage, which could potentially lead to health concerns such as insects and rats, should be the first priority of residents and waste haulers in the areas affected by the strike. Odor problems will also be resolved when the decomposing garbage is removed.

Cipriano also asks that citizens continue good waste management. “Chicago metro area residents and business owners should be praised for their incredible patience during the strike and their willingness to still exercise good waste management habits. Let’s keep up the good work.”

Illinois law does not allow “commingling,” or mixing of household trash with landscape wastes.
