Springfield, Ill. -- Building Resources Inc. (BRI) in Springfield is the newest member of Illinois EPA's Partners for Waste Paint Solutions Program and will assist Central Illinois residents to rid their homes of unwanted or unused paints for beneficial reuse.

"This program keeps the material from the waste stream and allows much of the material to be used for its intended purpose," announced Illinois EPA Director Renee Cipriano.

Beginning this Saturday, October 25, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., Building Resources Inc. (BRI), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing resources to Central Illinois citizens to encourage the renewal and revitalization of our communities, will become the newest Paint Partner. BRI is located at 1545 North 11th Street in Springfield and is operated by Dr. John Charlton. They will be accepting latex and oil-base paint. There will be a $1 charge per gallon container or 50 cents per quart. Monthly collections are tentatively planned.

About 25 percent of the waste collected during the Illinois EPA's one-day Household Hazardous Waste Collections is paint. The Agency then pays a contractor to properly dispose of it. In order to address this large volume of paint, and be able to direct available funding to the collection of more hazardous materials, the Agency initiated the "Partners for Waste Paint Solutions" program in 1995.

These partnerships offer consumers the opportunity to deliver unwanted paint to local participating paint retailers, or Paint Partners such as the BRI, where the paint will be reformulated or remixed for reuse. The complete list of Paint Partners is on the IEPA website.
