Springfield, Ill. -- A $300,000 grant has been approved for the city of Northlake, in Cook County, to fund work restoring 1.29 acres of wetlands and stabilizing approximately 1,880 feet of Addison Creek shoreline.

The funding comes from federal money made available under Section 319 of the Clean Water Act. It is awarded through the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and will be matched by a contribution of $200,000 from Northlake.

IEPA Director Renee Cipriano praised the planned restoration efforts. "Addison Creek is a tributary to Salt Creek, where we are currently working to improve impaired water quality. Nonpoint source pollution control efforts in this tributary will benefit both Addison Creek itself, as well as Salt Creek," she said.

Nonpoint source pollution results from runoff of stormwater or snow melt that carries lawn and farm chemicals, petroleum products and other pollutants from fields, streets and parking lots into nearby water bodies.

The Addison Creek project is expected to begin in October of this year and be completed by Sept.30, 2005.
