News Releases - 2003$138,054 Grant To Evaluate Conservation Activities and Expedite Information Exchanges on Water Quality and Wildlife Habitat
Springfield, Ill. -- Prairie Rivers Resource Conservation and Development, Inc. (RC&D) has been approved to receive a $138,054 grant to aid in evaluation of progress to date, and develop better methods of tracking and exchanging information on water quality improvement efforts, Illinois EPA Director Renee Cipriano has announced. The grant comes from the U.S. EPA Section 319 financial assistance grant program, administered by the Illinois EPA under Section 319 of the federal Clean Water Act. The Prairie Rivers RC&D organization is working with the Illinois EPA, Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the University of Illinois to implement the project. Ongoing conservation activities within the group's boundaries will be evaluated to determine positive environmental impacts that they have generated to date. This information will be used to modify an existing IDNR tracking system and develop an online interactive web tool to locate and perform mapping exercises, and to estimate sediment and pollutant load reductions. "Our hope is to ultimately have an interactive tool that both state agencies and watershed planning groups can use to target the best uses of the limited resources available to protect water quality and wildlife habitat," Director Cipriano said. The work is scheduled to run from November 2003 through August 2005. |
