Springfield, Ill. -- A grant of $131,458 has been approved by
Governor Blagojevich to continue improvements to water quality in the
Side Channel Reservoir at Charleston (Coles County) by installing shoreline
stabilization and a sediment retention basin to trap sediment before it
enters the reservoir, Director Renee Cipriano has announced.
The IEPA has worked with the city of Charleston since the 1990s on improvements
to protect both Lake Charleston and the side channel reservoir. The reservoir
provides drinking water to the community. The side-channel reservoir feeds
into the lake via pumping.
The grant comes from the U.S. EPA Section 319 financial assistance grant
program, which is administered by the Illinois EPA under Section 319 of
the federal Clean Water Act.
"This effort supplements our previous work to protect and improve water
quality in the Charleston side channel reservoir, and is a good example
of how nonpoint source pollution control works. Making these improvements
upstream of the reservoir can remove many pollutants and their sources
before they can impact the reservoir, and reduces required treatment at
the water plant," Director Cipriano said.
