News Releases - 2003$290,675 Grant Approved for Salt Creek Streambank Stabilization
Springfield, Ill. -- Illinois Environmental Protection Agency Director Renee Cipriano today announced approval of a $290,675 grant to the Cook County community of Elk Grove Village for water quality improvements in Salt Creek. Salt Creek has been classified by the Illinois EPA as an impaired stream unable to support certain designated uses. Efforts are currently underway to develop a Total Maximum Daily Load for the stream, a process to determine the amount of a given pollutant that can enter a water body before the water is deemed to be no longer safe for such uses as swimming and fishing. In many cases, excessive siltation caused by eroding streambanks is major cause of stream impairment. The grant for Elk Grove Village, when combined with a $193,783 match from the village, will permit stabilization of 3,060 feet of eroding streambanks along approximately 1,530 feet of the creek. "Stabilizing eroding streambanks and reducing deposits of silt in a stream are important steps in restoring water bodies like Salt Creek to health," Director Cipriano said. "It is gratifying to be able to help communities like Elk Grove Village take steps to protect their valuable water resources." Funding for the grant program comes from federal money distributed by the IEPA under Section 319 of the federal Clean Water Act. |
