News Releases - 2003IEPA Praises Freeport Brownfields Redevelopment Project As Model: "Tutty's Crossing" Dedicated
Freeport, Il. --- Freeport was praised today for its leadership and persistence in working with state and local agencies, including Illinois EPA, in turning a former battery factory site posing an environmental hazard into a recreational and economic asset. The Tutty's Crossing trail head for the Grand Illinois Bike Trail, with public services, parking and boat launch facilities, on the site of the former Burgess Battery site along the Pecatonica River in downtown Freeport, was dedicated today. "Freeport has shown undaunting determination to redevelop this site as a community asset while promoting natural resource preservation and Illinois EPA is proud to have been a partner," said Illinois EPA Director Renee Cipriano. Illinois EPA awarded Freeport a $120,000 Municipal Brownfields Redeveloment Grant in 1999, which enabled the city to participate in the investigation, design of the cleanup plan and oversee the cleanup of the site by Gould Electric, the parent company of Burgess Battery. Subsequently, Illinois EPA assisted Freeport in securing a $50,000 U.S. EPA Brownfields Assessment Demonstration Pilot Greenspace Grant at three sites related to the Jane Addams Trail. Freeport has also been awarded funds from the Illinois Department of Transportation for bicycle trail development and from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources for the boat launch facility. Freeport expects an influx of several thousand visitors using the trail with a positive impact on adjacent downtown restaurants, hotels and shops. Illinois EPA has provided Brownfields Redevelopment Grants to 77 communities, for a total of $8 million for investigating and designing cleanup plans for environmental hazards at former industrial and commercial sites. |
