News Releases - 2003Partners for Waste Paint Solutions Has a New Partner in Rock Island
Springfield, Ill. -- Keim's Paint Center in Rock Island is the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency's newest Partner for Waste Paint Solutions, Illinois EPA Director Renee Cipriano announced today. Jerry Keim, owner of Keim's Paint Center in Rock Island, has signed an agreement with the Agency to accept unwanted or unused oil based and latex paint products from local area residents, for a small fee, at his store located at 4661 44th Street in Rock Island. Reusable paint will be reformulated by the Keim's Paint Center for resale or donation. The Illinois EPA will dispose of any waste paint in an environmentally sound manner. Over the years, an estimated 24 percent of the waste collected during the Illinois EPA's one-day Household Hazardous Waste Collections is paint. The Agency then had to pay a contractor to recycle or properly dispose of it. "In order to more efficiently address this large volume of paint, and be able to use available funding to collect more hazardous materials, the Agency initiated the Partners for Waste Paint Solutions program," said Cipriano. "Working with our Partners and the citizens we have reduced the paint at the collections to about 10 percent of the total." The program offers consumers the added convenience of being able to deliver unwanted paint to local participating Paint Partners, where the paint can be reformulated or remixed for reuse. The complete list of Paint Partners is on the web at http://www.epa.state.il.us/land/citizen-involvement/paint.html. |
