Springfield, Ill. -- Illinois EPA Director Renee Cipriano announced
that the agency has granted a permit that will allow Tazewell County Landfill,
Inc. to begin construction of currently undeveloped areas of an existing landfill
into a municipal solid waste landfill unit in Tazewell County.
Specifically,
the application requested modification of the development design for the
currently undeveloped Areas 2 and 3 of the Indian Creek facility, located
two miles west of the village of Hopedale. Previously, the landfill was permitted
to accept only coal combustion waste, known as fly ash.
“The approved plans will allow this landfill to accept municipal waste and non-hazardous
special waste for disposal,” said
Cipriano. “When developed and
permitted for operation, the facility will meet the more stringent landfill
design standards.”
Once the construction phase of the landfill is completed, the owner will
be required to submit an application to the Illinois EPA to operate the facility.
The permit is issued in this two-phased approach in order to ensure that
the
landfill is built in compliance with the Illinois landfill regulations. Developing
this facility will to lead to approximately 10 construction jobs and six
permanent jobs and is expected to operate for ten years.
