Pollution PreventionGreen Communities Demonstration Grant ProgramThe Governor's Office and Illinois EPA created the Green Communities Demonstration Grant Program to help communities find more effective ways for dealing with environmental challenges and planning for a sustainable future. This grant program supports community-visioning processes that build the capacity of communities to address local environmental issues through collaborative problem solving and consensus based decision-making. Under the program, the community visioning process must address at least four broad environmental topics, such as clean air and water; energy efficiency; waste reduction; natural areas protection and restoration; green space development; renewable energy; compatible growth; and environmental education. The visioning process also must be designed to involve participation from broad segments of the community. The end result for each participating community will be an environmental vision for the area, long-term goals and action plan for achieving the desired vision. Communities that receive grants will be eligible for technical assistance and priority consideration for state funds to help them implement their environmental strategies. Demonstration CommunitiesThe following sixteen communities were awarded environmental visioning grants in May 2002.
