P2 & E2 Internship Program

Pollution Prevention (P2) & Energy Efficiency (E2) Internship Program

Student Information

Program Summary

In 1989, the Illinois EPA placed its first two intern students to work on pollution prevention (P2) projects at two electroplating facilities in the Chicago area. This year, the Illinois EPA will be hiring at least 10 - 15 qualified students.

During the work assignment, the student will be required to submit a biweekly report to our office. At the end of the twelve weeks, each student will be required to submit a final written report and abstract pertaining to the progress made on the assigned P2 and energy efficiency (E2) projects. The session will conclude with oral presentations by all interns.

What:   Pollution Prevention & Energy Efficiency Internship Program
The paid internship salary is $2,500 per month for three (3) months.

Who:

BS, MS, PhD, or MS/PhD students
You must have completed your junior year at an accredited university prior to the start of the summer program. You must be taking classes in an engineering discipline (civil, chemical, electrical with a power background, environmental, industrial, manufacturing, or mechanical), or MS environmental management (a BS in an engineering discipline is preferable).

Please note: If you are not attending an Illinois university, you must have Illinois residency.

When:   Training is conducted in Springfield for all selected candidates the week prior to Memorial Day. The intern will begin working at the host facility the day after Memorial Day for the remainder of the 12-week session.

Where:   Initial one week training in P2 techniques in Springfield. The remainder of the 12-week session will be working as a temporary full-time employee of a host facility focusing on assigned P2 project(s). The host facility can be located anywhere in the state of Illinois.

Why:   To help Illinois industries and/or organizations identify and take advantage of P2 opportunities that reduce or eliminate waste or emissions at the source through substitution of safer raw materials, improved housekeeping, use of more efficient production processes, or product reformulation. E2 recommendations oftentimes result in energy cost savings to the host organization while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
