Baltimore Aircoil Company (BAC) located in Paxton, Illinois, is a subsidiary
of Amsted Industries. Its manufacturing facility in Paxton, Illinois, employees
232 people, and will soon be adding 46 more jobs with a new addition to
the plant. BAC manufactures cooling towers, evaporative condensers, and
other heat transfer equipment. The primary goal of the P2 intern was to
reduce the generation of industrial wood waste from the packaging of incoming
products and materials.
Results:
The waste woodpile was at a very unmanageable level prior to the start
of the internship. The intern organized the wood waste and increased
the reuse of the wood as much as practical. The woodpile was virtually
eliminated with individual departments being made responsible for its own
wood
waste.
Recommendations the intern made included:
- A program to store and return the wood skids directly to the vendor
for incoming stainless steel sheets has been implemented. The amount of
wood
waste diverted from landfill will be over 70,000 lbs. per year. BAC
will save $1,285 per year in disposal costs and the vendor will save over
$11,000.
- The wood skids and top frames utilized for PVC fill for cooling
towers will be replaced with either a plastic pallet or a steel rack.
These non-wood skids will be shipped back to the originating facility,
another BAC plant.
Overall this will save them over $66,000 per year in labor, wood
purchased, and disposal and reduce the amount of wood to landfill of over
225,000
lbs. per year. The Paxton facility will reduce wood waste to landfill
of
over
80,000 lbs.
- By replacing steel banding with nylon reusable banding,
this will divert 1,500 lbs. per year from disposal and save $2,400.
