Cadbury-Schweppes manufactures chewing gum. It was purchased from Pfizer
in 2003. The Rockford facility covers 28 acres, which includes three processing
buildings. Currently over 750 people are employed at the facility, making
it one of the largest employers in the Rockford area.
The objectives of the P2 projects were to reduce the discharge of non-contact
cooling water (NCW) and improve the efficiency of the compressed air system.
Results:
The intern developed a mass balance of the NCW system and made
several recommendations to reduce the annual discharge of water by over
170
million gallons per year. These include:
- Installing a new cooling tower
- Installing solenoid valves on air lines
- Implementing a closed loop system for water heaters
This will result in an estimated annual savings of $90,000. The intern assisted in an energy efficiency study of the compressed air
system. She determined that by installing solenoid valves and repairing
leaks within the system, the facility could save at least $59,000 annually.
It was also recommended that the facility institute a leak detection and
repair program to keep the compressed air system running efficiently.
